Recall Merlin Generator Service Notice 2

13th Dec 2007.
This Service Notice follows on from our Service Notice of 30th November 2007.

Following instances of a small number of Merlin Generators catching fire, detailed
investigations have been carried out. It is concluded that the fires were caused by a combination of exhaust system fires caused by coking of the exhaust, coupled with the insulating material in the Generator canopy being contaminated with diesel following improper refuelling methods.

Investigations also revealed that on a small number of units, there was evidence of leakage from the fuel tank connections, indicating a failure to comply with the
Maintenance Instruction Schedule.

Based on our investigations and in view of the potential health and safety issue raised, we are recalling all Merlin Generators and Welders so as to allow a full investigation of each unit and, if deemed necessary, allow us to replace or remove the insulation material.

We will be contacting buyers in due course to make arrangements for the return of these Generators. Pending the above, our advice remains that the Generators should not be used.

An opportunity has been taken to revise our instruction manual for these Generators to better emphasise the importance of correct refuelling methods and the importance of correct maintenance of Generators, particularly when being used on low load conditions. Revised instructions will be included with each generator upon its return to you.

Yours Sincerely

Bryan Harris
