Harrington Generators (HGI) has been making small petrol sets for over 20 years. In fact they now number in their thousands. It's also a fact that these stalwarts of the building site get neglected and forgotten in the 'continuous improvements' department. After all just how long do most people think they will last on a building site.
Interestingly the key feature that mattered to the major and less than major plant hire companies was reliability. The cost of a breakdown on site far outweighed the rental revenue. The cost of staff not working on site far outweighed the cost of the generator. It simply made good sense to pay for a reliable set.
HGI looked again at the ubiquitous 2.2 kW set and looked at making it better. For one thing, they stayed with the Honda engine, not a Chinese copy, not a Chinese Honda, but a quiet European specification that enables the sets to conform to the EU noise regulations, as well as give a long trouble free life.
The alternator has been uprated so that it is difficult to burn it out. The electrical rating is now greater than the engine's output. To be safe each socket is protected by its own circuit breaker and each socket is slash proof BS4343.
The sockets are top box mounted and face inwards so they are far less liable to damage. The frame has been strengthened and is made of British steel ERW tube. HGI looked at the various polyester powder coats available and have settled on a hard wearing red. Despite all these small, but significant changes, the price has not gone up.
