When HGI received instruction from Airwave Solutions in September to install a standby generator on one of their sites it was not a surprise. The team had completed in excess of 1000 sites since the start of the Firelink project in December 2006. However the Chocolate Factory held a few new challenges and surprises not least the lack of chocolate!

HGI continued it’s success on the Airwave Firelink project with the installation of a diesel standby generator at the Chocolate factory in September 2008. The site was acquired by Airwave as part of the national project to provide 7 day emergency back up to the Tetra transmission masts used by the emergency services in Great Britain. This was site 1051 in the project but proved challenging for a number of reasons. Firstly the site called for an integrated fire shutdown system. Secondly the area acquired for the generator was a tight 1360mm X 1000m space under the fire escape. Thirdly the site had a high number of radios which required supporting due to its position in the London area and Finally the site was no longer a chocolate factory ! Rather a multi- use arts and crafts centre with a new impressive glass reception which unfortunately was built in the line of the acquired wiring run.

The Solution

HGI called on their vast knowledge of bespoke generator production and provided Airwave with a 16Kva Diesel generator with integrated fire shutdown system and a bespoke exhaust system to address the space issues. The size of the generator was such that the power requirements of the Airwave radio system were address without compromising the planning constraints of the site. The unit was delivered by our specialist Hi-Ab team who were able to access and deliver the unit to site despite the space constraints. HGI dispatched a design team to agree with the site owner a new wiring route to overcome the obstacle of the new reception and agreed an out of hours Sunday installation so not to disturb the lease holders in the Art center. The installation was completed on the 28th September 2008 and underlined HGI’s continued success in this sector the only failure on the site was the lack of chocolate for all involved
